Dean Madzarovich

Slovenian born Dean Madzarovich started his bodybuilding career at the age of 15. A couple of years later he won the Mr Universe title in Paris. Dean's bodybuilding career has been one of the most successful bodybuilding careers in the world, although he has had his ups and downs. The down periods, though, were a big boost to his motivation. He's known around the world and has featured every bodybuilding mag in the world. Who is this man, what does he do in life now and what are his goals in live? We asked him.
Koper, Slovenia. The sun is shining like never before in this city on the Adriatic Sea and temperatures are sky high. Inside, the air conditioning has created a nice atmosphere. I meet Dean at 20:30.

The 100 metres
Dean's sportive career started at a very early age. Before getting into bodybuilding, Dean practised athletics. "I was a sprinter in the 100 meters", Dean tells us. I ask him, what made him change to bodybuilding. "My older brother already got into bodybuilding and he stimulated me to do the same. I was 15 years old when I started bodybuilding". The question whether he could still run a decent 100 meters, is answered positive: "Yes, I'm still quite good at that!".
Mr Universe
When Dean started bodybuilding, he was quite slim, but his suberb set of genes made him grow rapidly. In 1991, he attended the Slovenian nationals. He went straight to number one. In total, Dean became Mr Slovenia three times, so it was time to move forward. The 1994 IFBB Grand Prix Belgium in Charleroi, which he won at the very young age of 22, was a good preparation for the 1995 WPF Mr Universe in Paris. He was awarded Mr Universe that year.
Winning the 1995 Mr Universe made him travel to Buenos Aires to do some posing in 1996 and to Los Angeles in 1997. It was there, where he became a pro. In the same year, Dean went back to Slovenia. It was the start of a down period. At the end of May of 1998, Dean injured his biceps and two months later he got involved in a car accident. For many people so much bad luck would have been a reason to stop training. Not for Dean: "Recovering from the injuries meant a great motivation to me!". He worked his way back to the top again and in 1999 he entered the WABBA World Championships. Again, he won.
His own gym
In 2000, Dean wanted to move to London. He decided to stay in Slovenia and to train for the 2001 Mr Universe. Needless to say, he became Mr Universe again that year. Since his 2001 Mr Universe title, Dean didn't enter in major competitions. A couple of years ago, he opened his own gym in Koper, called Fit Mania. He has been trying to sell bodybuilding in his home country ever since. It has proved very hard to obtain this goal. "Most people only want to be muscular, no matter what it takes. People should be more intelligent". When people would train more wisely, it would definately improve the image of bodybuilding in Slovenia, according to Dean.
Future plans
This year, Dean has been operated on again, causing him to be on a recovering training schedule now. Like back in 1998, Dean seems very motivated to get back to the top. According to himself, he has lost much mucle tissue: "About a year ago, I could hardly wear this t-shirt". Nonetheless, Dean still looks very impressive. We make an appointment to do another interview next year. We're sure, Dean will be back at the top then.
Dean, we wish you lots of success and quick recovery!
